Our challenging sailing program offers a sailing education experience for people of all levels who want to prepare for anything from weekenders to long-term cruising and ocean passage making. Our 2022 sailing school schedule includes an ocean passages to Newfoundland and back. In august we’ll be competing in The Monhegan Race, a 141nm dash, that will surely provide some challenging sailing. We’ll spend the rest of the summer based out of our homeport, Rockland, cruising between Portland and Roque Island.

Coastal & Offshore Maine Sailing School Expeditions

The coast is where all the action and challenge is: commercial traffic, rocks, tides and currents. New England is one of the most difficult areas to sail in the US, notorious for huge tides and thick fog—but the beauty is unbeatable! These expeditions feature long days of lessons, planning, navigation, drills, scenarios and fun. We’ll sail among the islands, ledges, and schooners of Maine’s bold coast, probably encountering fog and other challenges along the way. You’ll also have the opportunity to complete a night travel. The instructors of Morse Alpha Expeditions have sailed to many parts of the world, and we still agree that setting a course for the northeast provides some of the most robust educational experiences and beautiful cruising grounds.

The Monhegan Island Race

The Monhegan Island Race is an overnight 141nm coastal race from Portland south to Boon Island Light, then east to Monhegan, and back to Portland for the finish. This expedition will begin in Rockland and sail to Portland for the race. We will practice sail handling along the way and like all our Maine courses work on navigation, seamanship, anchoring, safety, and systems. This should be a fun expedition, with a casual race to finish off the week.

Offshore Sailing School Expeditions

Learn to Sail with Morse Alpha Expeditions Sailing School

These multi-day passage expeditions transit challenging waters. Staying focused while on watch is imperative. We’ll be route planning and sharing weather reports with you even before the expedition begins, so you can learn the process in detail. You’ll experience the offshore routine, commercial traffic, ocean waves, currents, rapidly shifting weather, probably some fog, and of course, “Land-Ho!”
