Rocinante(rah-sih-nan-tay) is a Norseman 447 cutter-rigged sloop, one of Robert Perry’s best hull designs. He has even referred to it as his “masterpiece.” Built by Ta Shing, one of the most esteemed boat yards in the world, her sleek design and robust construction combine speed and overall performance in a superbly coordinated blue water passage maker. We chose the center cockpit version because the aft cabin provides two single bunks and a more centralized and large salon, which doubles as our classroom. Rocinante, also has a beautiful new hard dodger.
Accommodations & Equipment
Rocinante sleeps seven in two double bunks and three single bunks. The salon seats seven for meals, musters and lessons. Her well designed galley has a four burner propane stove with oven, a 12v freezer and refrigerator, with salt & fresh water foot pumps. We have kept Rocinante simple and unstoppable. Our auxiliary is a 2018 60hp Beta Marine that pushes us along at 6-7 knots. Rocinante has a Viking RescYouPro eight-person liferaft, plus an additional 4 person Portland Pudgy lifeboat, Fiorentino Para-Anchor, Shark Drogue, extensive first aid supplies, an EPIRB. For navigation and communication she is equipped with Simrad Halo Radar, Orca Core & Tablet, Icom VHF radio, Em-Trak AIS Transceiver, Starlink, and Iridium Go. She has 2 electric bilge pumps, one manual pump, 5 fire extinguishers, and emergency Type 1 PFDs for each person. We carry 130 gallons of water in 3 tanks and a Sea Water Pro 40gph watermaker. There are 120 gallons of diesel in 3 tanks, plus three 5 gallon jugs on deck. For electrical power we have 615 amp hours of 12v Lithium battery capacity and for charging, a 215amp alternator plus 580 watts of solar panels. Our tender is an 8′ Portland Pudgy hard rowing dinghy with a 2.5hp Suzuki outboard. Rocinante’s sail plan includes: a fully battened mains’l, 110% jib, hank-on stays’l – all made by Zoom Sails, a symmetrical spinnaker by North Sails, plus storm tris’l and jib made by Gambell & Hunter Sails.
