The Boat Owners Illustrated Electrical Handbook ex

The Boat Owners Illustrated Electrical Handbook explains it all. Everything you need to know including some ABYC requirements. It’s an essential shipboard reference. It’s one of those books I poured over earlier in my career, but hadn’t cracked in a few years until I started taking the @abyc_boatsafety electrical certification class. Wow. I had forgotten how great this book is.
The class also suggested this other book, which is geared towards trouble shooting electrical issues. A new one for me… looks great so far.

Before YouTube was the go to for HowTo’s, there was this book. I learned how to do most things on the boat by referencing this classic. It’s right up there with @boathowto’s Nigel Calder. BoatHowTo btw has some fantastic courses!

Many moons ago, long before ROCINANTE, Haven, a home, the minivan and the garden…. We both worked aboard schooners and climbed our way up through the hawse pipe from dishwasher/deckhand to mate and eventually captain. Those experiences shape our sail training program and the lessons of seamanship, preparation and protocol we learned aboard schooners translate directly to successful cruising. We love sharing our unique perspective with our students. It’s what brings us joy!

Boat projects update: The dorade boxes. On the #norseman447, Perry designed the dorades into the deck. A brilliant idea. But unfortunately the vertical clearance wasn’t enough to keep water out down below. We’re on a mission to remedy that, but sacrificing the cowl vent in the process. We will epoxy a hose barb into the current drain holes and then connect a hose between the two barbs.

Next phase of the hard dodger project is building

Next phase of the hard dodger project is building out the template with something stronger and more stable than the lewan we used to get a rough idea of angles, sizes, placement etc. The Norseman has some interesting design restraints for the dodger. For example, the skylight over the galley prevents the base of the dodger from being placed where we would ideally like it to be. To accommodate the sky light, the dodger base has to be moved aft a bit, which in turn causes steeper angles in the panels. Another constraint is the cockpit size and the short distance from the companionway to the helm. Nothing we can’t work with, but the constraints make creating this dodger a challenge. We are quite happy with what we have come up with, after a few variations and exploratory tangents.
