Finally out on ROCINANTE! This gentleman has been Finally out on ROCINANTE! This gentleman has been trying to sail with us for a few years now, but life got in the way! We’re so happy he could finally make it work! ROCINANTE is beginning her sail North from Buzzards Bay towards Rockland, with the plan to arrive before the wind and waves of Hurricane Erin reach The Gulf Of Maine.
Working aboard schooners and tall ships like this Working aboard schooners and tall ships like this one @schoonerfrench taught me so much! This old girl was built in 1871 here in Maine to carry cargo. Now she carries passengers in the windjammer trade. I always encourage any and all sailors to get aboard as many different boats as possible to expand your knowledge and vocabulary of sailing, seamanship and to gain perspective. Yachts are by comparison very easy to sail and maneuver. Vessels like the Lewis R French take some coaxing and ingenuity to get them to do what you want… if even. I worked aboard The French as a young man fresh out of college. It was the first boat job I ever had. Obviously, a life changing experience 🙂 She’ll forever hold a special place in my heart 🫶

Fantastic trip from Halifax to Rockland! A little Fantastic trip from Halifax to Rockland! A little bit of everything… and plenty of learning.
The active process of plotting your course and pos The active process of plotting your course and position on a chart in contrast to the passive watching of an icon on a screen is at the very heart of what it means to be situationally aware. The plotting process is not complicated at all, but it takes active engagement. This simple, repeated process is what makes you a better sailor, navigator, planner, and is the fuel that propels your mission of gaining confidence and developing seamanship.

As paper charts disappear from existence, how can we best stay engaged and active in the navigation process that equals or surpasses the benefits of plotting on paper?

⬆️ that’s a legit question.

Sailing home, but wishing the journey wasn’t com Sailing home, but wishing the journey wasn’t coming to an end. The freedom and the satisfaction of harnessing the energy, and making best possible speed, always. The juxtaposition. The time dissolution. Freeze these moments a little longer.
