Sailing from Halifax to Rockland, off the southern

Sailing from Halifax to Rockland, off the southern coast of Nova Scotia. We run 6hr watches during the day and 4hr watches at night. It works well for our crew of 6 running a two watch system. It’s the schedule I learned at @sea_education_association and the one that always made the most sense to me. Each watch gets 6 hrs of rest during the day and this schedule dogs itself. While we usually keep the watch schedule fairly consistent throughout the passage, if it’s not working for some reason, we adapt.

We take the 88lb anchor right off the bow for pass

We take the 88lb anchor right off the bow for passages. It saves a lot of wear and tear on the rollers and the fittings up forward. It also alleviates worry and the need to go forward and secure the anchor if it were to come loose in big seas. For us it’s a good lesson in using the available tools to get jobs done safely and efficiently. Do you remove your anchor before a passage?

The reality… Our little bear is hibernating this week. It’s been too cold to work aboard. Once the temps rise above the teens, we’ll be back down to finish the chainplate removal and inspection, Change out all the fuel hoses and continue removing the generator. #winterprojects #forthewin #alreadygone #escapepod #boatprojects

NEW EXPEDITION ADDED: This lengthy passage through the Mediterranean Sea (over 1000nm!) packs a lot into a short time frame. We will be traversing over half the Med—the entire Amalfi Coast, The Strait of Messina, crossing the Ionian Sea, and exploring both The Cyclades and The Dodecanese islands of Greece. We’ll find stops along the way to rest, explore, and soak in the history, culture and cuisine. There will be multi-day passages to plan, opportunities to anchor, and Med Moor. This will be the perfect combination of real passage making and real Med cruising.

The perfect sub zero winter project… it’s the little tasks, that keep our minds occupied… stripping the cockpit table… in the basement, safe. For now.

2016… started off in St. Martin, and ended in Main

2016… started off in St. Martin, and ended in Maine. It was our second year owning ROCINANTE and the business. She looked a lot different back then. We found @johnkretschmersailing and shared our new film’s DVD with him. We explored the windward islands, made some @sailrite repairs, played in the BVIs. We sailed north to the Bahamas, sailed the @portlandpudgydinghy around. We still had Dory our cat. We continued north towards Maine via NYC. We took a short break to fly to Belize to conduct dolphin research with our non profit Hello Ocean. Maine welcomed us home with some Maine Mud Masks. It was a pretty good year.
