Rocinante is a Norseman 447 cutter-rigged sloop, one of Robert Perry’s finest designs. He has even referred to it as his “masterpiece.” Built by Ta Shing, one of the most esteemed boat yards in the world, her sleek design and robust construction combine speed and overall performance in a superbly coordinated blue water passage maker. We chose the center cockpit version because of the privacy the aft cabin offers and the more centralized salon, which often doubles as our classroom. We chose this particular Norseman because she had some nice upgrades and one of the most important requirements—fiberglass, not teak decks.
Accommodations & Equipment
Rocinante sleeps 7 comfortably in 2 double bunks and 3 single bunks. The salon seats 7 for meals, muster and lessons. Her well designed galley has a 4 burner propane stove with oven & broiler, a 12v freezer and refrigerator, and salt & fresh water foot pumps.
Our auxiliary is a 2018 60hp Beta Marine diesel engine that pushes us along at 6-7 knots. Rocinante has a Viking RescYouPro eight-person liferaft, plus an additional 4 person lifeboat, Fiorentino Para-Anchor, Shark Drogue, extensive first aid supplies, an EPIRB, Furuno radar, Standard Horizon VHF radio, AIS Transceiver, 3 bilge pumps, 7 fire extinguishers, and emergency Type 1 PFDs for each person. We carry 120 gallons of water, and 120 gallons of diesel. For power we have 700 amp hours of AGM battery capacity and for charging, 170 watts of SunPower solar panels. Our tender is an 8′ Portland Pudgy hard rowing dinghy w/ sailing rig.
