Sept 18–25: Rockland –Newport

A classic fall passage! This near coastal/offshore leg from Rockland ME to Newport RI will give you a good idea of what “heading south” is like. Depending on the forecast, we may spend a night anchored in Penobscot Bay to give us time to get to know the boat and go over some safety protocol. But if the forecast looks good, we’ll head offshore right away. We’ll plot a course for The Cape Cod Canal, but typically this is an upwind passage as the prevailing SW’lies still blow even into September. So plan on some upwind sailing, tacking our way south. There will be plenty of commercial and fishing traffic to dodge during this part of the passage. We may see Whales off Stellwagen Bank. Plan on 2-3 days at sea, non-stop, during which you’ll be standing watch, and running the boat night and day. We’ll transit the canal, and continue on our way towards Newport. If time allows, we may anchor for a night in Martha’s Vineyard, Cuttyhunk, or Block Island. This will surely be classic New England sailing.
