ur challenging program offers an educational experience for people of all levels who want to prepare for anything from weekenders to long-term cruising and ocean passagemaking. The 2021 schedule includes a number of ocean passages. We’ll be based out of our homeport, Rockland Maine and spend the summer cruising Down East Maine and beyond, plus some rendezvous’ with the Maine Windjammers for a few trips later in the season. But the exciting news is that Rocinante will be participating in the Marion to Bermuda Race!
These multi-day passage expeditions transit challenging waters. Staying focused while on watch is imperative. We’ll be route planning and sharing weather reports with you even before the expedition begins, so you can learn the process in detail. You’ll experience the offshore routine, commercial traffic, ocean waves, currents, rapidly shifting weather, and of course, “Land-Ho!”
Coastal & Offshore Expeditions
The coast is where all the action and challenge is: commercial traffic, rocks, tides and currents. New England is one of the most difficult areas to sail in the US, notorious for huge tides and thick fog—but the beauty is unbeatable! These expeditions feature long days of lessons, planning, navigation, drills, scenarios and fun. We’ll sail among the islands, ledges, and schooners of Maine’s bold coast, probably encountering fog and other challenges along the way. You’ll also have the opportunity to complete a night travel. The instructors of Morse Alpha Expeditions have sailed to many parts of the world, and we still agree that setting a course for the northeast provides some of the most robust educational experiences and beautiful cruising grounds.
Maritime Heritage Expeditions
Sail-training is our number one priority but Maine’s maritime heritage runs deep. These expeditions offers a unique opportunity to experience the historical side of sailing. In addition to the sail-training curriculum we offer on our Rugged Maine Coast expeditions, we will make a few stops along the way to see some of the 22 picturesque lighthouses and 16 Maine Windjammers, dating back to 1871.
MoA 218 features the Schooner Festival, and parade-of-sail. We will get a taste of the “schooner bum” culture, a tour a schooner (COVID dependent) and enjoy the almost famous Schooner Crew Talent Show.
MoA 219 features a wooden boat building special. We will get ashore to explore the well-known WoodenBoat magazine and school. We will watch the windjammer parade-under-sail from the best seat in the house.
